Sept. 8th
(Wed) :
Drive to Staunton, Virginia to participate in year
round event. The walk
passes Woodrow Wilson Library, his birthplace, through Mary
Baldwin College campus, Gypsy Hill Park and Thornrose Cemetery.

Sept. 9th(Thurs):
Drive to Knoxville, Tennessee to participate in year
round event. Stroll through the site of the
World's Fair of 1982 with its fountains, waterway and waterfalls
and Sunsphere. Visit the new East Tennessee Veterans Memorial
at the north end of the park. Traverse the campus of the
University of Tennessee to their lovely test gardens. View sites
from the Civil War Siege and Battle of Knoxville. Walk along
Volunteer Landing - a promenade along the Tennessee River with
recordings of Knoxville history and panoramic views. Continue onto Gatlinburg
event that walks along the
west fork of Little Pigeon River and Sugarlands Nature Trail.

Sept. 10th (Fri) :
Drive to
Asheville, North Carolina to participate in tour and then
year round event of the Biltmore Estates. Stroll
through gardens, newly renovated conservatory and along paths
and trails throughout the Estate not normally seen by visitors.

Sept. 11th (Sat) :
Drive a short distance for the Asheville walk. This trail walks
portions of the Urban
Trail through vibrant art deco downtown as you experience the
ambience of a designated "All American City". Visit the restored
Grove Arcade with new shops, restaurants, grocery store
and condos that are now in place to depict its original
uniqueness as an indoor shopping mall back in the 1920s. You'll
walk by the Thomas Wolfe Home. In the afternoon, we will
participate in the Asheville Arboretum Walk. This event passes
through formal and informal gardens and along forest roads and
trails, along babbling streams and over bridges where large
trout hide. 11 km also goes around a lake. Return to hotel
Sept. 12th (Sun):
Drive to Black Mountain for year round event. This walk
passes along a Greenway
and the Swannanoa River, past unique shops and antique stores in
historic Black Mountain, through quiet, picturesque
neighborhoods, pass the Red Rocker Inn, (a historic and highly
rated B & B) and around Lake Tomahawk with gazebo and mountain
views.
In the afternoon, drive to outside of Winston-Salem for
Salem Lake Walk. Hotel

Sept. 13th
(Mon):
Drive a short distance for
the Old Salem Walk. Trail winds through downtown, quiet
neighborhoods
of the Historic West End, along the strollway – a
segment of Rails-to-Trails, and Old Salem - a reconstructed
early Moravian town. In the afternoon drive a short distance to
the Bethabara Park event. Trail is on paved and unpaved
greenway, on natural woodland paths with some hills and on a
boardwalk across a wetland area. Return to hotel
Sept. 14th (Tues):
Drive to Greensboro, North Carolina for two walks today
in Greensboro!
The first walk is from the YMCA. The
trail is mostly on city sidewalks and a paved park
trail. See February One Place and Woolworth Building - site of
1960 sit-in that helped to launch the civil rights movement -
museums, stately homes, and Greensboro College.
In the afternoon, participate in the Tannenbaum Park event.
This walk starts at Tannenbaum Park which
has
the oldest house in Guilford County, predating the
Revolutionary War Battle fought at Guilford Courthouse in March
of 1781. The trail, on park roads, gravel paths, and paved
greenways, winds through four contiguous parks, past a lake,
and
a maze of monuments commemorating the Revolutionary War battle.

Sept. 15th (Wed): Drive to
Durham, NC for Duke University year round event. The
trail is predominantly on sidewalks and gravel paths with only
slight hills and some steps. It goes through the Sarah P. Duke
Memorial ardens and Duke University. The walk's highlights are
the beauty of the gardens and the magnificent Gothic
architecture of the campuses including Duke Chapel.
