in Your Area

Finding a social work job isn’t easy, especially if you have relocated. Here are some tips to help you find your next job in the profession of social work.

Join Professional Organizations – Make sure you are a member of your local NASW, and if you have a specialty practice, join that specialty’s organization (National Association of Oncology Social Workers, etc.). Go to meetings and volunteer on committees.

Websites – search and find websites that focus on social work jobs in your area. NASW has a jobs website, your local county and state governments with have websites and your local hospital systems will have employment pages.

NASW – Visit your local chapter of the NASW and inquire if they have a job board or know anyone that is hiring.

Informational Interviews – This is a great way to get a foot in the door and develop a sense of where the jobs might be in your area. Often hiring managers will grant an informational interview because they are interested in getting to know you without the pressure of an interview. Social workers love to help each other.

Targeted Applications – Once you find advertised positions, make sure you meet the qualifications and have an interest in the job before you apply. Hiring managers talk to each other. Blanketing an area with resumes shot-gun style is not well received.
